Stucco homes are desirable for the appearance and their resilience. Experts and homeowners alike appreciate the classic elegance of stucco as much as they appreciate its long-lasting nature. Like anything, however, when stucco is improperly installed, problems arise. Our experts give you the straight talk on what causes stucco delamination and what to do about it.
What is stucco delamination?
The delamination, or separation, of stucco layers occurs when any or all of the layers of stucco separate from one another or the wire mesh that the initial stucco coat is applied to.
How can the stucco coats separate?
Each stucco coat serves a different purpose and is prepared with differing ratios of ingredients.
- The scratch coat: This first layer a rough coat to create a base application on the metal lathing, which is completely wrapped around the exterior of the home. The roughness acts as a great bonding layer.
- The brown coat: This second layer is much smoother, and although still gritty, serves as perfect base coat for the finishing coat to adhere to.
- The finish coat: This final coat is meant to create the “finished” or desired appearance for your stucco exterior. This later is the most aesthetically pleasing, but on its own, it will not last.
If the coats are prepared improperly, applied in poor weather conditions, or applied without adequate drying time in between, stucco delamination can occur.
What other damage can arise from stucco delamination?
Stucco delamination often leads to extensive cracking. In addition to being unattractive, excessive cracking in your stucco exterior will lead to foundational damage. This can cause mold damage or rot to your home. Don’t delay finding the fix for stucco delamination as delay will simply increase the extent of the damage and the cost of repairs or remediation.
